Kwale County Governor Salim Mvurya and his Deputy Fatuma Achani together with the County Cabinet have have held a meeting with the Shimoni Port Appraisal Team members from the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) in a bid to establish the Shimoni Port.
During his tour of the Coast region last week, President Uhuru Kenyatta, KPA Board Chairman Gen. (Rtd) Joseph R.E Kibwana, KPA Managing Director Dr. Daniel Manduku toured the Shimoni Port, where Kenyatta directed that the port be turned into an industrial fishing hub.
“The shimoni port is a project that we fully support as a County Government and I am glad this morning to be holding a consultative meeting on this project with the Project Appraisal Team from the Kenya Ports Authority,” said Mvurya.
He said establishment of the port will grow the economy by exploring the blue economy, adding that Shimoni fish port project is a hub for further development in Shimoni and Kwale as a county.
The objectives of the Shimoni development projects include;
- Contribute to the development of the rural communities.
- Create additional employment.
- Create entrepreneurial opportunities.
- Improve living standards of all citizens.
- Improve Kenya’s competitiveness as a maritime and logistics hub.
- Contribute to the revenue generation of KPA.
Coast regional coordinator Elungata and his team already toured the area to kick-start the exercise of creating cold rooms to store the fish, as per the President’s directive.
