Kilifi County Governor Amason Kingi has placed himself after his Deputy Gideon Saburi reportedly tested positive for coronavirus.
Below is Kingi’s statement released on Sunday, March 22, 2020.
Following the confirmation of one case of coronavirus in Kilifi County as communicated by the Cabinet Secretary in charge of Health, Hon. Mutahi Kagwe, my government is scaling up efforts to ensure safety of our people from the spread of this virus.
In this regard I ask for full cooperation and understanding as some of these measures may be drastic as necessitated by the prevailing situation.
I want to confirm that the patient has already been taken into isolation. We have already identified all county staff who came into direct contact with the patient and we have ordered them to go on mandatory self quarantine for fourteen days during which period very close supervision will be undertaken by our trained medical personnel and enforcement officers to ensure strict compliance.
The patient has also provided us with the names and contacts of those with whom he had direct contact.
Our County coronavirus emergency response teams have already been deployed across the county and are tracing each and every contact to ensure that all these people immediately and fully observe all coronavirus protocols including the mandatory 14 days quarantine so as to keep our people safe.
I also came into direct contact with the patient and as the coronavirus protocols demands, I have placed myself on self quarantine starting Thursday 19 March 2020. I also had the emergency response team visit me at my home to collect specimen for testing. I got my results and they turned Negative.
Despite turning negative, coronavirus protocols dictate that I continue with self quarantine till the expiry of the mandatory 14 days. I will fully comply.
Just like many people are currently working from home because of this pandemic, I will also work from home to ensure that I give proper and timely guidance to our people and particularly the Kilifi County coronavirus emergency response teams so as to safeguard our people from this pandemic.
Let me emphasize that we MUST all strictly observe the safety measures earlier communicated by both the National Government and Kilifi County government. We shall be reviewing these advisories from time to time as the situation dictates.
Please stay safe.
God bless Kilifi County.
God bless Kenya.
H.E Amason J. Kingi, EGH
Governor, Kilifi County.
