At least 13 pupils were on Monday evening killed in a stampede at Kakamega primary school in Kakamega County.
Reports say children were leaving their classes for home at about 5pm when the stampede happened.
Nearly 40 other students were injured and taken to hospital, with some of them being released after receiving treatment.
According to Kakamega police commander David Kabena thecause of the stampede is not yet clear, but an investigation has been launched.
However, some reports said the pupils had rushed down a narrow staircase at the end of the school day before it collapsed.
Unconfirmed reports also said some of the children fell from the third-floor of the building as they ran.
The bodies were moved to the Kakamega County Hospital Referral Motuary even as leaders and Kenyans wish quick recovery to the victims.
